STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State’s Merrill Warkentin, the James J. Rouse Endowed Professor of Information Systems, has been named an Association for Information Systems Fellow.
Warkentin, also a William L. Giles Distinguished Professor in the College of Business, is receiving this prestigious international designation for his outstanding contributions to research, teaching and service in the field of information systems. He joins a prestigious group of about 150 scholars who have been awarded this designation, approximately half of whom reside in the U.S.
“This award is in recognition of all of the valuable contributions you have made to AIS and to the field of information systems during your distinguished career,” said Suprateek Sarker, chair of the AIS Fellow Award Committee and University of Virginia professor, in announcing the honor to Warkentin.
As the primary professional organization for researchers studying information systems, AIS serves society through the advancement of knowledge and the promotion of excellence in the practice and study of information systems. The organization consists of over 5,000 members in about 100 countries.

An active member of the AIS for several decades, Warkentin is a frequent featured speaker at AIS conferences and others around the world and has been a visiting scholar at dozens of universities on four continents.
“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition as a proud member of the Mississippi State University family of scholars, and I am sincerely grateful for the unwavering support I have received from the MSU College of Business for nearly the past quarter century,” Warkentin said. “I am also extremely grateful for the collaborative research partners and doctoral students I have been fortunate to work with over the last four decades.”
Warkentin’s research primarily focuses on the impacts of organizational, contextual, situational and dispositional influences on individual computer user behaviors in the contexts of information security, privacy, social media and e-government. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 published manuscripts and over 125 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and he is the author or editor of seven books on technology.
For the third year in a row, a Stanford University study identified him as among the top 2% of scientists globally, based on his research impact. He consistently ranks among the 50 most prolific MIS scholars in the world and is among the 100 most cited information systems scholars of all time globally, ranked 54 in the h-index. A 2023 study in the journal Information & Management found his research to be the second most influential of all global security scholars.
In 2018, he was named a Distinguished Scientist by the Association for Computing Machinery.
Warkentin said he takes pride in working for MSU, which recently was ranked by Forbes in the Top 50 of “America’s Best Large Employers” and has been cited as a “Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education for eight consecutive years. Warkentin earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics and his Ph.D. in management information systems from the University of Nebraska.
